FRIDA KAHLO is arguably one of the most famous female artists in history, being instantly recognisable by her elaborate hairstyles, colourful clothes and distinctive brow. As the wife of one of Mexico’s greatest artists, Diego Rivera, Frida’s work was often overlooked during her lifetime, but she has been acknowledged posthumously as an artist of equal, if not greater, importance than her husband.
Frida sustained multiple injuries during a bus accident as a teenager and never fully recovered from the trauma. At times, when she suffered most, she was detained in bed for weeks at a time. This did not stop her, however, and she set up an easel by her bedside, which permitted her to paint while she was bedridden. Her most graphic work depicts both the mental and physical suffering she endured with images of her failing body. However, some pieces of Frida’s work, while still dark, celebrate the beauty of nature and of her native Mexico with bright flowers and indigenous plants.
Frida’s unique individualism and intelligence that made her such an innovative painter also allowed her to lead an active political life as a communist and ardent Mexican nationalist. The fact that she was able to lead a full life despite her chronic suffering and to achieve such astonishing levels of respect, not only in the artistic world, but also from politicians worldwide, is a testament to her inspirational power and endurance.
Our Resort 2016 Frida sandal takes inspiration from Frida’s own iconic wardrobe.
